Chapter Four
Tolliver tossed and turned all night, missing Jin’s body next to his. Yes, there’d been long stretches in the past two years when Jin had been training, but this was different. This time he didn’t know the outcome, and it weighed heavily on his mind.
He finally gave up trying to sleep around 6:00 a.m. and decided he needed to clear his head, so he headed to his private gym. But all the running and rowing in the world couldn’t seem to clear his head, so he decided to go skiing. He called his general manager, Walter, knowing he woke him up but not really caring, and had all his appointments rescheduled. Today was going to be a day out on the fresh powder. Right now he needed the wonderment of a white world, where no one could bother him. He made plans to meet Walter in an hour so he could take the lift up the mountain. He showered, dressed in thermals and grabbed his gear before heading out of the resort. The day was chilly and bright but it was just what he needed. Jumping on a ski mobile, he headed up to the lift station.
A lot of snow had fallen and it was loose. Even in his distracted state, he recognized the hazard it boasted and made a mental note to grab a transceiver from the instructor’s locker. Walter greeted him with a worried nod.
“You going to be out all day?”
“No,” Tolliver said. “I need a run. I’m heading out on the northern slope. I’ll take it down and radio in when I get to the bottom.”
“I’d feel better if you took Jin with you.”
There weren’t very many people who knew about his relationship with Jin, but Walter was one of the only men he trusted.
“Jin…is dealing with his own issues right now.”
Walter raised an eyebrow. “I see. Well, there’s a ton of new powder that fell last night and I want you to be careful.”
“I saw. Don’t worry. I’ve got my transceiver.”
“I’d like for you to wear the air bag too.”
Tolliver raised a derisive eyebrow. “I hardly think I need an airbag.”
“Humor me,” Walter said. “Especially if you’re going alone on the northern slope. Be foolish, but don’t be stupid.”
Tolliver had to grin at that logic and grabbed the air bag pack to satisfy his manager. Walter was right. It was foolish enough to ski off-trail alone, so he didn’t need to be a stupid prick and argue about safety. He strapped the air bag vest on without complaint. After receiving a pleased nod from his manager he headed out to the lift and waited for the seat. He eased onto it with no problem and watched the world fall away.
The heavy snowfall from the past couple of days made Vail a winter wonderland and Tolliver couldn’t help but remember last Christmas. He and Jin had spent the holiday wrapped up in each other’s arms, talking about their wishes and dreams. He’d hoped they would have a repeat of the holiday, but now everything was different.
